Invention Today, Starting Your Car Gets a Bit Easier

No Comments Written by admin on November 24th, 2008 in Technology.

Nov. 24, 1903: Clyde J. Coleman is issued a patent for an electric automobile starter.

Coleman originally applied for the patent in 1899, but his early designs proved impractical. The need for this kind of starter for an internal combustion engine was obvious. Automobiles were getting larger, and hand-cranking — the method used to get the pistons moving in order to make ignition possible — was not only cumbersome, but physically demanding and potentially injurious.

The hand cranks in use at the time were built with an overrun mechanism meant to disengage the crank from the spinning drive shaft, but it was designed to work in forward drive only. If the car backfired, the engine could slip into reverse, forcing the crank backward sharply. The result could be a broken thumb, or worse.

The electric starter motor, when perfected, meant the end of the hand-cranked automobile.

Coleman sold his patent to the Delco Company, which was taken over by General Motors. Charles Kettering, a Delco engineer who joined GM, did some tinkering with Coleman’s design and received his own patent for an improved version. The 1912 model Cadillac became the first car to replace the hand crank with an electric starter motor.

Most automobile manufacturers switched over to the electric starter during the teens, although Ford’s Model T continued using the hand crank through 1919. With the exception of those old Model T’s, almost every car on the road boasted an electric starter by 1920.

“As real as it gets” by advertising firm, Bates 141 Jakarta. A very clever representation of, I dare say, one of our design software’s most recognizable user interface. Even the tag line is great.

In a world that’s topsy turvy, the Web remains stalwartly optimistic. In their voting BW’s Best of the Web list, readers did flag SimplyHired, the job site, Paul Kedrosky’s Infectious Greed blog, which is closely following Wall Street’s meltdown, and FootNoted, which combs through companies’ Securities and Exchange Commission filings for info investors might miss.

But for the most part, voters stuck to voting for the video sites, gaming sites and blogging technologies that help them get through the day and stay in touch with family and friends. Newcomers on the list ran the gamut, from SportsFanLive, a new community site that lets you organize the news around your obsessions, to the Microsoft Worldwide Telescope, which lets amateur astronomers explore the cosmos through their computers. Actually i’ve spent my time to browse all the category and that was fun also some website maybe kinda strange for me but when i visited

A Replacement of Wooden Desktops

One Comment Written by admin on September 22nd, 2008 in Featured, Headline, Technology.

Now, researchers at Durham University are giving classrooms a makeover, replacing students’ wooden desktops with interactive multi-touch ones. Along with a team of educators and manufacturers, the researchers have recently unveiled SynergyNet, a hardware-software system similar to Microsoft Surface that offers an immersive and potentially more engaging learning experience for youngsters. Pupils using the interactive tables can, for example, work out math problems visually and physically (using their fingertips to move around units) or see the teacher’s blackboard demonstrations right on their desks. The system has already been implemented in one unnamed UK school and is expected to appear in other primary and secondary schools over the next few years. According to a report by website Science Daily, the hardware and software combo also uses vision systems that can see infrared light, allowing it to recognise both single and multiple touches. This information is transferred to Last.fm’s database (”scrobbled”) via a plugin installed into the user’s music player. The profile data is then displayed on the user’s profile page. The site offers numerous social networking features and can recommend and play artists similar to the user’s favourites.

The Meteor by Andrew Kramer

What is The Meteor? This mini-movie is an excuse to highlight visual effects in a movie-like scene. All we had was a deck of cards and nerdy glasses and the rest is history. Rather than shooting a single video clip with no context, we made a short movie that makes no sense. Besides we had nothing better to do. The other reason we made this was to tell you about our great products for Visual Effects & Motion Graphics. With your support we can keep making these horrible movies but more importantly, teach you great visual effects. Be sure to check them out!
